After almost a year of non-stop cooking, you do reach points when you have absolutely no clue where you’re going next. You try to make different things but there is also the weight factor to worry about and these pull you back and forth in a tug of war.
This train of thought seemed never ending and so I told myself to make some comfort food that reminds me of home. My list of comfort food is pretty enormous and therefore it took quite sometime to figure out but in the end I successfully narrowed down my choice to a simple home made toor dal with tadka. The beauty of the dal lies in the tadka. And ultimately it is your mind and heart that gives you the comfort in the food you eat.
I cooked dal with salt and turmeric in my pressure cooker. The tadka ingredients were:
– 1 generous tbsp of ghee
– 1 tsp mustard seeds
– 1 tsp jeera
– 1 tsp garam masala or curry powder (a less spicy version of garam masala with tons of turmeric and coriander giving it a very yellowy colour and retaining the garam masala texture)
– 1/4 – 1/2 tsp amchur powder
Garnish with coriander/ curry leaves.
This simple tadka is not only easy to make but presents a full meal on your table. This is great especially for people who work and do not have the time to consume proper meals every day. You don’t have to feel guilty anymore about not having a proper meal like you used to back when you were home. This also makes a perfect soup cup when you have guests over. On the whole, it’s one of the best comfort foods ever.
